  • Inspiration comes from all sorts of places, people, occasions... I was motivated to make this my topic for August, after a recent heated debate with a person that was too small-minded to acknowledge the relevance of a common health problem, and worse still, the relevance of natural medicine in helping people find real solutions to their concerns.

    I believe low libido is an important health issue for adults, one that is often handled by the good old reliable "head in the sand" approach. Well, it's time to get informed, and start enjoying a healthy, fulfilling sex life.

    Secret 1: Eat a healthy, unprocessed, plant-based diet with as little sugar and processed grain as possible. High levels of sugar can actually turn off the gene that controls our sex hormones.

    Secret 2: Avoid drinking alcohol in excess - aim for 3 to 4 alcohol free nights / week.

    Secret 3: Exercise regularly, esp high intensity interval training (HIIT), which can optimise your human growth hormone and testosterone levels which are important in sexual function.

    Secret 4: Get 7-9 hours of good quality, restorative sleep (get to bed by 10pm night owls!).

    Secret 5: Discuss your medications with your GP - some anti-depressants, anti-histamines, opioid painkillers, blood pressure meds, can cause or exacerbate impotence.

    Secret 6: Choline and Vitamin B5 supplements - to enhance a neurotransmitter in the brain that triggers the sexual message.

    Secret 7: Panax ginseng and Maca root are traditionally used in herbal medicine as libido-enhancing tonics.

    Secret 8: Eat high quality fats such as avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, grass-fed meats, eggs, raw nuts and seeds. Fats help make sex hormones and line/protect our nerve cells and brain. Some of these foods are also high in Zinc, which is important to the hormone system.

    Secret 9: Learn to manage your stress - Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Counselling, Yoga, Meditation, Bowen Therapy, Massage Therapy, or Kinesiology can help with day to day stress, but also anxiety and mild depression.

    Secret 10: JUST DO IT! The more often you have sex, the more likely you are to want to keep doing it. Beside the mental connection, more frequent sex helps increase vaginal lubrication, blood flow and elasticity, which in turn, makes sexual activity more enjoyable.

    Did I mention, lock your bedroom door so the kids/grandkids can't get in?
